Naturalness
All Klorane products are vegan (no animal-origin ingredients). With the exception of products from the Flax range (an animal derivative is used in the fragrance), the Chamomile and Honey brightening suncare range, the Acacia Honey Junior detangling hair and KERATINcaps dietary supplements.
Klorane skincare is formulated with 2 main principles: naturalness and safety for the whole family. In fact, it's not just because an ingredient or a formula is natural or organic that it is not harmful. Only tolerance tests, rigorous clinical monitoring of our developments and a cosmetovigilance service allow us to ensure an excellent level of safety. The multitude of existing organic labels are absolutely no guarantee of safety, which allows us to certify the source of ingredients. Most independent organic labels prohibit, for example, chemical preservatives, silicones, fragrances and synthetic dyes... but the substitution ingredients used are not always safer:
- Essential oils used to replace synthetic fragrances can be highly allergenic depending on the target to which they relate. Allergic people will of course be more sensitive, but someone tolerant, after repeated use, can become sensitive to an allergenic.
- The alcohol that replaces preservatives is a drying product for the epidermis, which also encourages the penetration of allergens.
These few examples explain why Klorane chose not to go through organic formulation in order to always prioritize the balance between safety and naturalness, especially among our most fragile consumers: babies. But for many of our ingredients, we have chosen organic certified or guaranteed them without any phytosanitary treatments.
A product is said to be "natural" if the content of its natural formula or natural-origin ingredients is at least 95%.
At Klorane, we have made the decision to prioritize natural-origin ingredients that have demonstrated their tolerance and effectiveness: new non-rinse 2018 body and baby products are the proof of at least 95% natural origin (excluding Eryteal).
From 2019, Klorane continues to improve: all of our new non-rinse treatments will be formulated with at least 95% ingredients of natural origin. The remaining percentages are essential ingredients for stability and / or sensory qualities that do not have natural equivalents that are also relevant and effective at present.
We have also made the choice of having 100% of our plant-based active ingredients. We prioritize organic cultivation or phytosanitary treatments (products, fertilizers). A quarter of our plants (which are used for our plant extracts) are grown in our own fields and by our own farmers.

Consumer safety is an absolute priority for the Klorane brand and Pierre Fabre Laboratories and, in accordance with European legislation, each of our products is evaluated by an expert toxicologist before it is placed on the market.
Within the Klorane brand and Pierre Fabre Laboratories, the evaluation of product safety is based on three tests:

Yes, some Klorane products include parabens, but only those that have been proven to be safe. Parabens are the original natural preservatives
that protect cosmetic products from bad bacteria and fungi. They have long been used in cosmetic products.
Listening to consumer concerns, Pierre Fabre Laboratories will replace parabens as and when they are reformulated. As a result, new products on the market will no longer contain parabens.
We invite you to contact our cosmetovigilance service by clicking here: contact.klorane@pierre-fabre.com to detail the problem, the circumstances under which they occurred and your contact details. The cosmetovigilance department will try to get back to you as soon as possible.
Yes, the expiry date guarantees the effectiveness of the active ingredients in the product as well as the quality of correct preservation of the various ingredients. Beyond this date, we no longer guarantee the product's effectiveness. It is therefore preferable to refrain from using the product.
There is also a lifespan after opening the product. Every product has an icon (e.g., an open pot) on the packaging, which mentions the duration of the expiry after opening, expressed in months.
COMMITMENTS
One of our commitments in our environmental approach is recycling our packaging.
All plastic packaging (tubes and bottles) of our products contain at least 25% recycled plastic.
Our shampoo bottles contain between 50% and 100% recycled plastic.
98% of our products are made in France. We prioritize MADE IN FRANCE, by promoting short supply chains between our extraction site, our laboratory supplier and our production site in order to minimize our impact on the environment in the Tarn region.
The other 2% not produced in France are the baby wipes, hair nutritional supplements, sprays and dry shampoos for industrial know-how reasons. The Klorane brand and, more broadly the Pierre Fabre group, is committed to combining our region of origin, Occitania and the company's development.
The Klorane brand is a part of Laboratoires Pierre Fabre Dermo-cosmétique. With regards to this, the aim of our group is to: Reduce our waste by 15% by 2025.
We are also committed to addressing the issue of waste beforehand by eco-designing our products. This issue is addressed in our packaging, for example, through the removal of boxes and labels, lighter packaging, using recycled and recyclable materials, etc. The issue is also addressed in our formulas by reducing the amount of ingredients...
Our goal is in line with the goal detailed in the French government's "Anti-Waste Law" : -15% between 2020 and 2030.

Palm oil, from oil palms, is grown intensively in various parts of the world and has a heavy impact on biodiversity. The sustainable supply of palm oil and palm derivatives is one of our laboratory’s major concerns.
From 2017, we have not used palm oil (obtained from mesocarp - flesh - palm fruit) in our products, and we have reduced more than 90% our use of palm oil (obtained by extraction from the seeds - kernels - fruit of the palm oil) for long-lasting palm oil certification.
We do sell our products in China and the tests imposed by local regulations are carried out by laboratories accredited by the Chinese authorities. Some of these tests are carried out on animals. However, we do not condone this method which we cannot oppose. European cosmetics as well as other international associations of professionals in the cosmetics industry engage in a dialogue with Chinese authorities to put an end to this requirements.
Laboratoires Pierre Fabre Dermo-Cosmétique, and thus the Klorane brand, as a member of Cosmetics Europe, supports actions to convince Chinese authorities to remove these tests on animals and to use alternative methods, as is already the case in Europe. We believe that it's by working with the Chinese government that we will be able to move things forward.
The safety of each commercial product remains our primary concern. However, concerned with animal welfare, our laboratory is a pioneer in identifying, developing and validating alternative methods to animal testing.
Thus, our laboratory complies with current regulations. In fact, we have actively contributed to European research programmes led jointly by the European Commission and the cosmetics industry in this field.
