THE BRAND
Our passion and respect for the world of plants encourages us to constantly contribute to its preservation. Inspiration from nature is infinite, but natural resources are not. It is our mission to strike the balance between nature's benefits and its preservation.
The principles of sustainable development have been fully integrated into our design and manufacturing processes: from controlled and responsible sourcing to biodegradable formulas (according to the OECD 301B test), eco-designed packaging to reduce the use of virgin plastic, manufacturing in France in a certified ISO 14001 factory, built according to the experimental High Environmental Quality approach to limit environmental impact during the manufacturing phase. We control our entire chain to ensure that our products have minimal environmental impact while guaranteeing maximum efficiency.
Nearly 20% of the active ingredients in our extracts come from plants that we grow organically on our land in the Tarn region in France. When production is not possible on our land, we establish contracts with sustainable, like-minded producers. All of our suppliers are evaluated on their environmental practices and social responsibilities.
We have chosen to develop biodegradable formulas (according to the OECD 301 B test) for our shampoos and conditioners since 2012. The level of biodegradability is assessed using a recognised method: the OECD 301 B method. For our non-rinse products, we prioritise naturally-derived ingredients and formulas with minimal ingredients. So new non-rinse products are formulated with a minimum of 95% naturally-derived ingredients.
With all new products, we set ourselves the goal of saving materials or incorporating recycled materials. So we have removed all our product leaflets. Our boxes and inserts are made from cardboard sourced from sustainably managed forests and where possible, we don't use them at all. For example, this is the case for the Klorane baby range, which was relaunched in September 2018. As of 2021, all our shampoo bottles are made of 100% recyclable and recycled plastic. We have also decided to remove the face and eye makeup removal wipes from our product range.
Our products are manufactured at an extraction site certified ISO 14001 for environmental management, in a factory built according to the experimental High Environmental Quality approach to limit the environmental impact during the manufacturing process. By using a biomass boiler, plant waste is processed into energy, which reduces our carbon footprint by 1,600 tonnes of CO2 per year. This biomass boiler also supplies the entire factory with hot water and ensures that 80% of its operation is based on renewable energy.
Klorane's passion for the world of plants is also demonstrated in our support for the Klorane Botanical Foundation, which aims to preserve and promote plant heritage around the world. Founded in 1994, it was built around three core principles: to protect endangered plants, explore botanical treasures and pass on the passion for conservation to as many people as possible. In over 25 years, 600,000 children have been made aware of the fragility of the plant world, and more than 130,000 trees have been planted to benefit ecosystems and local populations.
Since 2019, the Pierre Fabre group committed all its brands to a responsible approach, the Green Mission Pierre Fabre. This environmentally friendly commitment to sustainable innovation to benefit nature and humankind establishes a global framework for action and a transversal approach based on five levers: Innovate, Protect, Respect, Guarantee, Engage. This initiative commits Klorane and all the Group's brands to a green and sustainable approach that is already part of our DNA.
